Unit Description

This unit outlines economic and social transformations in Asia and analyses the prospects for continued economic growth in the region. Through case studies, the unit identifies the general issues common to all the industrialising countries, such as India and China. It analyses the role and interaction of the state and the market in economic development and examines the historical and economic forces that led these countries to adopt market-oriented reforms. It provides a detailed study of industrialisation strategies, manufacturing labour systems, and women workers. The unit also reviews the environmental impacts of industrialisation in Asia. The unit also presents a comprehensive analysis of Asia regional organisations with reference to economic development in the region.
