This unit outlines economic and social transformations in Asia and analyses the prospects for continuated economic growth in the region. It explores the success of Japan and East Asia, and identifies the general issues common to all the industrialising economies. It analyses the role and interaction of the state and the market in economic development and examines the historical and economic forces that led these countries to adopt market-oriented reforms. It provides a detailed study of industrialisation strategies, manufacturing labour systems, and women workers.
