Unit Description

This unit provides an account of the economics and social transformation of Southeast Asia since 1850. It familiarises students with the major Southeast Asian countries: Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines; and surveys the development of particular economic sectors in selected countries. These include agriculture (rice, rubber), mining and manufacturing. The unit also examines demographic patterns, international labour migration and gendered labour relations in the context of economic policy and industrialisation strategies. It then focuses on the environmental impacts of resource development.
