Unit Description

This unit examines aspects of environmental management as affected by the cotton industry. Areas covered include: ecology; soil degradation; pesticide breakdown; water quality; salinity; vegetation; legal obligations; and pesticide application techniques. There is a mandatory 4-day practical in June.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. the aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the actual, and potential impact of cotton prodcution on the environment, and an ability to apply this understanding in the development of optimal management practices for sustainable cotton production;
  2. understand the Best Management Practices program (BMP) of the Australian Cotton industry. That is , understand the application of an Environmental Management System (EMS);
  3. understand the environmental sustainability issues in regard to soils, soil water, salinity, biodiversity and climate;
  4. appreciate how to assess farms for environmental status, eg. Native vegetation assessments; and
  5. appreciate the environmental implications of pesticide applications.
