All off-campus students will receive a "Cotton Production" manual produced by the UNE and Cotton CRC personnel. All off-campus students will attend a four-day Mandatory Intensive School in May and take part in online exercises and communication.

Unit Description

This unit provides the grounding for sustainable cotton production by examining aspects of breeding, cotton growth and development, nutrition and soil management, irrigation, farm design and cotton quality. Off-campus students attend an intensive school at the Australian Cotton Research Institute near Narrabri. On-campus students attend an excursion.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the framework and principles of the cotton production system. The unit will provide the agronomic skills and knowledge of natural, human and economic resources necessary to produce economically and environmentally sustainable cotton crops;
  2. understand the use of inputs, particularly crop nutrition and water management, for efficient cotton production;
  3. understand the infrastructure behind the production of cotton in Australia, from plant breeding and seed production through in-field growth to ginning of the raw cotton fibre;
  4. identify the differences between cotton production in Australia and other countries; and
  5. identify the management of cotton crops towards greater economic and environmental sustainability.
