Unit Description

This unit introduces biometrics, which is the study of recognising individuals based on their unique physical or behavioural characteristics as they relate to security and access control. It begins with the basics of biometric technologies and discusses how and why biometric systems are emerging in security solutions. An emphasis is directed towards authentication, authorisation, identification, and access control.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.
Disclaimer Unit information may be subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Assessment Assessment information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. explain the different biometric traits and modalities;
  2. present the basics of biometric technologies;
  3. describe how biometric systems are used in authentication, authorisation, identification and access control; and
  4. apply knowledge of unit content in problem-solving processes, individually or in a team.
