Unit Description

This unit provides students with an introduction to feminist film analysis, and a feminist perspective on a range of mainstream films which represent and/or explore the representation of women. Students will study each film text in relation to a particular issue, and along with a specified piece of theoretical and analytical writing. Some of the films studied are: 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'; 'Aliens'; 'Vertigo'; 'The Piano'; 'Orlando' and 'Silence of the Lambs'.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand and apply key theories and terms developed in film analysis;
  2. analyse and interpret sequences from selected feature films with reference to the visual and aural components of the mise-en-scene;
  3. understand feminist perspectives in film theory and critiques of mainstream cinema texts; and
  4. identify and discuss issues in cinematic representations of women in particular social and cultural contexts.
