Unit Description

This unit develops skills in the analysis of mainstream films and introduces a number of issues related to the conventions of genre and to the representation of such cultural categories as gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality. These aspects of film will be explored through a selection of films and genres including science-fiction, romance, comedy and westerns, and in light of relevant scholarly articles.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. apply key theories and terms developed in film analysis;
  2. analyse and interpret narrative sequences from feature films;
  3. apply theories of narrative and interpretation in relation to film genre; and
  4. identify and discuss representations and reception of such issues of identity as gender and sexuality in feature films.
