Unit Description

This unit is concerned with Chinese cultural history from the 20th century onwards, together with developments and issues in modern Chinese culture. Through the study of recent Chinese literature and film, the ideas and themes of interest to Chinese cultural practitioners, and the influences upon them, will be explored. Some of the readings will be available either in Chinese or English.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate in-depth understanding of the historical and intellectual background to contemporary Chinese culture;
  2. evaluate the significance and context of a range of representative works of modern Chinese literature and film;
  3. analyse texts extracted from those works;
  4. demonstrate in-depth understanding of key events, players and issues pertaining to cultural activity and thought in contemporary China;
  5. demonstrate critical awareness of the reporting of Chinese cultural issues in the west; and
  6. demonstrate reflective practice and critical awareness of her/his developing responses to Chinese cultural expression.
