Unit Description

This unit is suitable both for students who have studied Mandarin Chinese to an advanced level, and also for students who are native speakers of Chinese with advanced competence in written English who have an interest in developing translation skills. Through translating authentic texts in a variety of genres between Chinese and English, you will develop advanced language proficiency and translation skills. Native speakers of Chinese and English work together to enhance their understanding of translation between the two languages.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. translate written texts in a range of styles and registers between Chinese and English;
  2. write translation commentaries which demonstrate critical awareness of significant issues and choices arising in the process of translation;
  3. demonstrate understanding of issues in translation related to differences between the lexical resources, the grammatical system and the textual organisation of Chinese and English;
  4. locate and make use of online tools and resources for translation; and
  5. demonstrate awareness of some current concerns of professional Chinese-English translators.
