Unit Description

This unit consists of the supervised preparation of a research dissertation of 8000-10 000 Chinese characters or 14 000-16 000 words in English, on a topic within Chinese language and culture studies which is mutually acceptable to the discipline and the student.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. formulate research questions pertaining to topics within the area of Chinese language and culture studies;
  2. display higher order, independent research skills;
  3. demonstrate advanced analytical abilities, in combining a broad range of research materials, often from several media, in order to answer their dissertation question;
  4. write up extended research reports in the area of Chinese language and culture studies, based upon independent enquiry;
  5. demonstrate an understanding of the methodological issues and display a broad knowledge of the overall subject area; and
  6. competently locate and work with source materials in Chinese.
