Unit Description

The unit consists of two intrinsically linked elements of equal value. Element 1 is an advanced Mandarin language skills programme developing high-level comprehension, academic writing and translation skills. Element 2 is a programme integrating research skills and directed reading in an area of Chinese cultural and language studies mutually acceptable to the discipline and the student.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of methodological approaches and issues pertaining to the study of Chinese language and culture;
  2. demonstrate advanced analytical skills in undertaking high level language work and critical reading of academic literature in the field of Chinese language and culture, for coursework components;
  3. demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of aspects of Chinese language and cultural studies at an advanced level;
  4. demonstrate advanced competence in Chinese language and ability to apply this skill in a range of areas; and
  5. locate and use resources in Chinese for research purposes.
