Unit Description

This unit is concerned with Chinese cultural history from the 20th century onwards, together with developments and issues in modern Chinese culture. Through the study of recent Chinese literature and film, the ideas and themes of interest to Chinese cultural practitioners, and the influences upon them, will be explored. Some of the readings will be available either in Chinese or English.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate understanding of the historical and intellectual background to contemporary Chinese culture;
  2. evaluate the significance and context of selected representative works of modern Chinese literature and film;
  3. demonstrate awareness of key events, players, issues and debates pertaining to cultural activity and thought in contemporary China;
  4. demonstrate critical awareness of the reporting of Chinese cultural issues in the west; and
  5. demonstrate reflective practice in awareness of her/his own developing responses to Chinese cultural expression.
