Unit Description

This unit is suitable both for students who have completed at least three years study of Mandarin Chinese, or the equivalent, and have advanced competence in written English, and also for students who are native speakers of Chinese with an interest in developing translation skills. Through translating authentic texts in a variety of genres between Chinese and English, you will develop advanced language proficiency and translation skills. Native speakers of Chinese and English work together to enhance their understanding of translation between the two languages.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. translate short written texts in a range of styles and registers between Chinese and English;
  2. display improving language proficiency;
  3. demonstrate understanding of issues in translation related to differences between the lexical resources, the grammatical system and the textual organisation of Chinese and English;
  4. demonstrate developing translation skills and strategies; and
  5. locate and make use of online tools and resources for translation.
