Unit Description

This advanced level unit is for students who have either gained a distinction or above in a full second year of Chinese study, or have completed three years of study or the equivalent. The unit will assist students to develop their Chinese writing ability as well as their familiarity with Chinese written conventions. Chinese and English writing style and conventions will be compared. Through various types of exercises students will learn to write text appropriate for both academic and practical purposes, covering a variety of different styles and genres.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. write in Chinese with increasing confidence and an intermediate to upper level of accuracy and appropriateness acceptable to a sympathetic native speaker of Chinese;
  2. demonstrate an awareness of the differences between the style and conventions of written discourse in Chinese and English; and
  3. demonstrate competence in planning, composing and writing a set range of text types appropriate for practical purposes.
