Unit Description

This unit is open both to students learning Chinese, and to those of Chinese heritage, and also to those who have no knowledge of the language but are attracted to Chinese calligraphy. Lectures cover materials, basic brush skills, styles, and the history of Chinese calligraphy. There are weekly practical workshops for on-campus students, two mandatory two-day schools for off-campus students, and the unit culminates in an exhibition of student work.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an appreciation of a major Chinese art form;
  2. display essential knowledge of the history and development of Chinese calligraphy;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the basic brush skills and styles of Chinese calligraphy;
  4. demonstrate a practical ability to write Chinese characters by brush;
  5. recognise and remember an increased number of Chinese characters ( Chinese language students only); and
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the structure of Chinese writing (Chinses language students only).
