HSC study of Chinese at 2-unit or 3-unit level, or equivalent, will be accepted as qualifying students for entry into CHIN201. Students who are native speakers of Chinese should normally enrol in units coded CHIN310 or above.

Unit Description

This unit follows on from CHIN201, and is designed to complete students' basic grounding in Modern Standard Chinese. Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese are further developed, as are students' skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention is given both to the structures and patterns of the language, as well as to its socio-cultural context; and various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society are introduced through studying spoken and written language texts.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. use Chinese appropriately in a variety of contexts relating to daily life and personal expression;
  2. demonstrate improving speaking and listening skills;
  3. recognise and use simple forms of most of the major grammatical structures of Chinese;
  4. recognise and write at least 1000 words in Chinese characters;
  5. accurately translate simple texts from Chinese to English, and sentences from English to Chinese;
  6. show awareness and use of a variety of skills and strategies as a language learner.
