HSC study of Chinese at 2-unit or 3-unit level, or equivalent, will be accepted as qualifying students for entry into CHIN201. Students who are native speakers of Chinese should normally enrol in units coded CHIN310 or above.The unit content in CHIN201 (2013) covers Lessons 18 - 24 of the textbook series New Practical Chinese Reader.

Unit Description

This unit is designed to build on previously established foundations of Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin). Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention is given both to the structures and patterns of the language, and also to its socio-cultural context, and you will be introduced to various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society through studying spoken and written language texts.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. use Chinese appropriately in a variety of everyday contexts;
  2. demonstrate improving speaking and listening skills;
  3. recognise and use simple forms of a variety of basic grammatical structures of Chinese;
  4. demonstrate mastery of the content of Lessons 18-24 of the textbook New Practical Chinese Reader; and
