The unit content in CHIN102 covers Lessons 11 - 17 of the textbook series New Practical Chinese Reader. Students who are native speakers of Chinese should normally enrol in units coded CHIN310 or above.

Unit Description

This unit continues your introduction to Modern Standard Chinese. The topics and situations covered this trimester are useful ones related to the practicalities of daily life in China. Your listening and speaking skills will improve, and you will learn to use many further types of simple sentence patterns. You will develop greater confidence in writing and reading Chinese, and significantly extend the number of characters you can recognise and write.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. use Chinese appropriately in simple conversations on topics including home, study, daily routines and future plans;
  2. recognise and produce the tones of Modern Standard Chinese with increasing accuracy;
  3. read and write simple passages in Chinese of at least 150 characters in length;
  4. demonstrate understanding of and answer questions in spoken Chinese on a known topic; and
  5. demonstrate mastery of the content of Lessons 11-17 of the textbook New Practical Chinese Reader.
