Unit Description

Biological concepts and principles are covered, including evolution, diversity of animals and plants, plant structure and function, and ecological principles and applications. Assessment will include a theory examination; a practical report in the form of a scientific paper; practical tests for on-campus students, and a written assignment and online quizzes for off-campus students.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a sound grasp of the central concepts in modern biology;
  2. Show familiarity with the knowledge that underlies those concepts;
  3. Demonstrate skills in observation and interpretation of what is seen;
  4. Apply the scientific method in particular and problem solving in general;
  5. Retrieve biological information and write about it in a range of appropriate forms;
  6. Show awareness of some of the ethical and social issues involved in acquiring and applying biological knowledge.

The practical classes and the written assignments are structured to train students to start from a level of background knowledge, to ask questions or postulate hypotheses about what is not yet known, devise methods for answering those questions, gather and analyse data and draw conclusions. Key laboratory sessions are structured around finding ways to answer questions about biological phenomena.
