Unit Description

This unit covers ruminant and monogastric animals and is designed for both 'generalist' and 'animal science' oriented students. The major constraints to increased animal production posed by environment (nutrition, climate, health and welfare) are considered in an integrated way, ie emphasis is placed on the interactions between factors such as nutrition, climate and disease and includes contemporary social imperatives such as waste management. A purpose-written book is provided. The unit provides sufficient basic scientific information about the major factors that limit animal production to enable students to analyse and advise on animal production problems in widely different practical situations. Students enrolled in ANPR515 will have to complete the requirements for ANPR415 and complete additional guided reading/practical work appropriate to the needs of individual students.

1	Knowledge of a Discipline A book written specifically for this unit provides students with up-to-date theoretical and practical information. Students take part in hands-on practicals (post-mortems, rumen in vitro simulations, analysis of production data, prepare plans for feed-lot heat stress alleviation on site at the University's research feedlot). Case studies are a feature of this unit.
2	Communication Skills Students prepare and deliver oral reports, write scientific reports and management plans.
3	Global Perspectives One laboratory session shows greenhouse gas production in an in vitro rumen; attitudes to animal welfare in different countries are discussed. Potential pandemics (avian influenza, mad cow disease) are explained and discussed.
4	Information Literacy Assignment and case study marking schemes for this unit include marks for 'Quality and scope of literature/references cited'.
5	Life-Long Learning 'Correct use of citations and references' is emphasized in teaching and is marked during assignment and case study assessment.
6	Problem Solving Development of a management plan for heat stress in 'Tullimba' feedlot is a major component of the climate module in this unit.
7	Social Responsibility There is a 'social and management' module in the unit where human-animal issues, stress, behaviour and waste management are taught, discussed and experienced in the field.
8	Team Work Students are expected to work in groups during some practical sessions.
