Unit Description

This unit examines production systems for sheep, beef and dairy cattle, pigs, poultry and emerging animal industries covering elementary aspects of reproduction, lactation, growth and development. As well the unit will examine in some detail the nature and assessment of animal products and their quality, including factors influencing carcass composition and meat quality and wool growth and quality. Students should note that this unit may require animal experimentation and/or dissection during some mandatory practical classes.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise the characteristics of the various products of the livestock industries (including meat, milk, fibre, eggs and draught power) particularly as they relate to consumer demand for the product;
  2. identify the range of production systems that have developed to produce these products in various environments, and the physical and biological constraints to such systems;
  3. understand the nature, structure and size of the major Australian livestock industries, and their relation to world markets; and
  4. identify other animal industries - the opportunities that they present and the constraints that they face.
