Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the ancient history discipline will be taught through lecture notes and essental readings. It will be assessed through online and written assessments.

Communication Skills
In this unit students learn to communicate through their assignment work. In their essays, students will communicate in well-organised and logical arguments the ideas they have developed in studying particular topics. Students are also expected, where possible, to participate in the Bulletin Board discussion and thus practise communicating their ideas with other students.

Global Perspectives
A study of bronze age civilisations should broaden the world perspective of a student.

Information Literacy
Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature.

Life-Long Learning
The skills which students acquire in this unit are ones which can be applied in a variety of contexts. The academic skills of research and learning which are taught in the unit will be relevant in many situation. Students should learn how to study and learn independently, and also how to learn in a group situation.

Every assignment in this unit revolves around a particular problem. Students apply their skills of information literacy to develop a written argument about a particular issue. As individual assignments elicit the student's own responses to a particular problem, students develop critical and creative thinking.

The study of ancient civilisations should lead to a reflection on the past and, hopefully, on lessons for the present and future.

Team Work
This is mainly applicable to on-campus students in tutorial situations, who can discuss topics and issues on a weekly basis. Students are also expected, where possible, to interact with others in discussions on the online Bulletin Board.
