| Unit Description |
Australia faces growing challenges in the area of plant biosecurity due to the increase in trade, travel and tourism. The introduction of plant diseases, pests and weeds has the potential to have serious consequences for agricultural industries as well as natural ecosystems and the natural resources base. This unit aims at covering issues relevant to biosecurity of plant-based industries and natural ecosystems. Topics covered include pathogens and crop bioterrrorism, insect pests, noxious weeds, transgenic plants, quarantine, border security, phyto-sanitary regulations and risk assessment, depending on the interests of students.
