Unit Description

Australia faces growing challenges in the area of plant biosecurity due to the increase in trade, travel and tourism. The introduction of plant diseases, pests and weeds has the potential to have serious consequences for agricultural industries as well as natural ecosystems and the natural resources base. This unit aims at covering issues relevant to biosecurity of plant-based industries and natural ecosystems. Topics covered include pathogens and crop bioterrrorism, insect pests, noxious weeds, transgenic plants, quarantine, border security, phyto-sanitary regulations and risk assessment, depending on the interests of students.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify important issues surrounding plant biosecurity;
  2. assess risks attached to the introduction of plants and plant based products (e.g. fruits, vegetables and flowers);
  3. crtically evaluate regulations and permit procedures for movement of plants, plant pests and pathogens; and
  4. describe biosafety issues related to food security.
