| Overview | This award provides students with knowledge and skills in the area of special and inclusive education. Students shall consider a range of effective and evidence-based instructional strategies for supporting the learning of students with diverse learning needs including the management of challenging behaviour. In addition, students will explore current research on issues relating to the effective inclusion of all students in primary and secondary classrooms and other related special education settings. |

| Entry Requirements | A candidate shall: (a) hold a three or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or (b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised university; or (c) hold a three-year degree of a University approved by the School; or (d) satisfy the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature; and (e) comply with the University's English Language requirements. |

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Most units in this award have components requiring an understanding of classroom-based practice of education or related educational settings. This includes development of programs for assessment and instruction and examination of employer-designed curriculum and teaching resources. Students are encouraged to bring their own work experiences to their units of study. |

| Advanced Standing | At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for: (a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University; (b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and (c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University. |

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:

Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) a minimum of one year as a part-time candidate;
(b) a maximum of two years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
To qualify for the award, and except with the permission of the School, a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 500-level.

Award of Degree
A candidate who meets the course requirements shall be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Special Education.
