Unit Description

This unit will examine the history of relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, using the notion of whiteness to understand dispossession, resistance, adaptation and survival of Aboriginal peoples in Australia. Models of community development and cultural awareness will enable students to develop strategies to equip them in working with Aboriginal people in a variety of professional practices. Students are challenged to examine and reflect on the self as a conscious personal and professional actor within the dynamic of ethnic interchanges.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe and analyse whiteness as a construct which shapes the dominant ideas about Australia's social, economic, cultural and political history;
  2. develop a way of thinking about Australian contemporary society which is based on an understanding of the history of relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people from Aboriginal perspectives;
  3. examine and reflect on the self as a conscious personal and professional actor within the dynamic of ethnic interchanges;
  4. develop the necessary cross-cultural awareness to work effectively with Aboriginal people in local and regional contexts;
  5. develop an understanding of the principals of community development as they apply to working with Aboriginal people; and
  6. apply cultural awarenss skills to various professional practice settings.

Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the assessment tasks. Students will learn valuable communication skills through participation in tutorials, online discussions and course work. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. 4 Information Literacy
Students will be taught to locate and evaluate relevant literature. Students will be assessed on their ability to use available sources and apply the information provide to the topics presented in unit. 		True True True

Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the lifelong learning skills to be able to research, write and discuss issues pertaining to working with Aboriginal people. Students are taught (through online and tutorial discussions) the social, cultural and ethical implications of their actions. Students will practice their teamwork skills through participating in tutorials, or online discussion postings. They will be required to discuss the weekly topics with their fellow students in a thoughtful and respectful manner (practise). 		True True True
