Unit Description

This unit builds upon the biochemistry introduced in BCHM210 and introduces microbiology. Topics covered include lipids and membranes, metabolism of amino acids, integrated energy metabolism in mammals, photosynthesis and plant metabolism, methods for handling bacteria, types of microorganisms including viruses and microbial biotechnology.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the major aspect of metabolism and microbiology;
  2. describe the major principles governing the flow of biochemical reactions;
  3. understand the key molecules central to the structure and function of life;
  4. describe metabolic division of labour which characterise mammals and plants; and
  5. develop a knowledge of basic microbiology.
