Unit Description

This unit will be taught wholly online using the latest technologies to provide an exciting teaching environment. The unit covers skeletal, joint and muscular anatomy and joint structure, as related to gross human limb/trunk movement. The anatomical coverage of this unit will support and extend the biomechanical principles covered in other units and provide an anatomical framework for more advanced study including the advanced and clinical biomechanics units.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe and discuss the functional anatomy of the major bones, joints, muscle groups and tendons involved in human movement;
  2. compare and contrast the action/s of the major skeletal muscle groups; and
  3. explain the structural and functional anatomical factors influencing and affecting human movement.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Students will demonstrate a command of a significant body of knowledge relating to the musculoskeletal anatomy of the human body. Discipline knowledge will be provided through the online environment. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of the discipline by online tests and an end of semester exam.
True True True
2 Communication Skills
This unit of study will enlarge the students' vocabulary with respect to human movement. It will enable the student to communicate with peers, clients and others and understand teaching in more advanced units in this discipline. Emphasis will be placed upon clear, concise and correctly spelt responses. Students will demonstrate capacity to appropriately apply new terminology related to this discipline in the online teaching and learning environment and through the online quizzes, assignment and an end of semester exam.
True True True
3 Global Perspectives
Students will be taught why a detailed knowledge of human musculoskeletal anatomy is central to the sports-exercise profession globally. This knowledge will be assessed in online tests, assignment and an end of semester exam.
True True True
4 Information Literacy
Students will: recognise the nature and extent of information needed; find information effectively and efficiently; critically evaluate information and the search process; manage information collected or generated; use information to construct new concepts or create new understandings; and acquire, organise and present information using technology. This attribute will be taught through activities in the online teaching and learning environment and through the online quizzes, assignment and an end of semester exam.
True True True
5 Life-Long Learning
Students will: reflect on limitations of, and have the capacity to evaluate their current knowledge; identify, evaluate and implement personal learning strategies for lifelong personal and professional development; and practice intellectual curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. This attribute will be taught and practiced in the online teaching and learning environment.

6 Problem Solving
Students will: apply logical, critical and creative thinking to a range of problems; identify critical issues in the discipline or professional area; collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem-solving. This attribute will be taught through activities in the online teaching and learning environment and through the online quizzes, assignment and end of semester exam.
