Why study the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) at UNE?
The Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) allows graduates who achieve at least a Credit average in the Master of Clinical Leadership to study at an advanced level. This course builds on the knowledge gained in the Master of Clinical Leadership and provides students with a pathway to doctoral level studies. Graduates of this course will have advanced knowledge of health leadership roles at a postgraduate level. This flexible distance education program, once successfully completed, allows graduates to enrol in doctoral level studies at UNE.

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) have successfully completed the Master of Clinical Leadership with at least a Credit average; and
(b) international students must meet the University's English language requirements.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 0.5 years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to two years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted must pass units to the value of 24 credit points.

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced).
Dissertation
1. A candidate who completes the course requirements shall submit a dissertation embodying an original investigation of a topic within their chosen specialisation.
2. Depending on the topic under investigation, the approval of the relevant Ethics Committee must be sought if required.
3. The School, on advice of the course coordinator, shall appoint a supervisor, who shall be a member of the teaching or research staff of the University or an associate of the University and on the UNE register of supervisors. The supervisor shall advise and supervise the candidate during the period of candidature.
4. Except with the permission of the School, on the recommendation of the supervisor, the dissertation shall not exceed 15,000 words of text, excluding appendices.
5. Candidates shall be required to enrol in and complete the dissertation in one or more consecutive teaching periods.
Submission of Dissertation
1. Electronic submission of the dissertation is highly recommended. Alternatively two soft bound and one unbound copy of the dissertation together with a certificate from the supervisor certifying that the dissertation is in a form suitable for examination can be submitted to the School following liaison with the course coordinator.
2. At least one month prior to the date of submission candidates shall inform the School of Health of their intention to submit a dissertation.
3. The Teaching and Learning Committee shall, on the recommendation of the course coordinator, appoint two examiners. Normally, at least one examiner shall be external to the University.
4. Each examiner shall be informed of the name of the other examiner. The examiners may consult. They shall inform the Teaching and Learning Committee if, before submitting their reports, they have consulted.
Examination of Dissertation
1. (a) Normally within one month of receipt of the dissertation the examiners shall decide whether to recommend that the dissertation be given the grade of Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction, or that it be revised for re-examination.
(b) In cases where a candidate has been required to revise the dissertation for re-examination, the dissertation shall be given the grade of Pass or Fail.
(c) The examiners may consult with the supervisor prior to preparing their reports.
(d) The examiners shall submit to the Teaching and Learning Committee their report(s) on the dissertation, along with their recommendation(s) on the grade.
2. (a) In the event of a disagreement between the examiners, they may be asked to consult and report to the Teaching and Learning Committee.
(b) If the examiners are unable to reach an agreement, the Teaching and Learning Committee shall refer their reports to a sub-committee appointed by the Chair for a recommendation.
3. (a) After considering the examiner's recommendation(s) and report(s), any comments from the supervisor and any recommendations from the appointed sub-committee, the Teaching and Learning Committee may:
(i) recommend that the dissertation be awarded the grade of Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction;
(ii) allow the candidate to revise the dissertation for re-examination;
(iii) appoint an additional examiner or examiners.
(b) The candidate, the supervisor and examiners shall be informed of the decision and the candidate shall be provided with a copy of the examiners report(s).
4. After the Teaching and Learning Committee has awarded the grade of Pass or higher, the course coordinator shall be contacted for advice on archival processes for the completed dissertation.

Knowledge of a Discipline
The Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) will consolidate knowledge of the scope of leadership roles in clinical healthcare settings and prepares graduates, from a diverse range of clinical backgrounds, to assume such roles. This knowledge is taught, practiced and assessed across the unit content and via written, oral and experiential assessments throughout this course.
Communication Skills
Communication is taught practiced and assessed in this course. Via self-directed distance education, students will practice their abilities to communicate on a professional level. This will include the development of literature reviews, a research proposal, dissertation and presentations to assess communication.
Global Perspectives
Students will be exposed to relevant international literature and will critically review recent research papers regarding the development of dynamic advanced leadership roles in healthcare settings. Students will be build on their skills in evaluating local, national and international trends in leadership and practise critical review and comparison of different approaches in a number of their assessment tasks.
Information Literacy
Students will be assessed on their skill in accessing appropriate resources via a range of information technologies, e.g. web-sites and e-journal databases. Most of the units will be offered with a substantial online component requiring students to practise accessing relevant content and interacting online.
Life-Long Learning
Education provided in this course will allow students to build on their knowledge of leadership roles in healthcare, by enhancing their self-directed learning and research skills, such as how to search for, critically review and present relevant information in the form of a dissertation.
Problem Solving
This course will provide a strong emphasis on advanced problem-solving and students will be taught via a range of activities, to apply their knowledge to potential problems. These abilities will be assessed via written assignments, a dissertation and online discussions.
Social Responsibility
A major component of this course is building advanced leadership skills that equip students to effectively lead the delivery of health services and support other clinical staff to provide evidence-based, high quality patient care.
Team Work
The interprofessional focus of this course reflects the team-based approach to healthcare that is gaining momentum globally across all health disciplines. In particular effective leadership is based on leading teams to work effectively together to provide high quality care for patients. Students will be taught and assessed to look beyond their own disciplinary background, in written assignments, a dissertation and via discussions.
