Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection
Why study the Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection at UNE?
The Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection provides education and training in anatomy by dissection to medical, dental and veterinary candidates. There will be two fields of specialisation. The Surgical Research specialisation is offered to Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Dentistry or Bachelor of Veterinary Science graduates. The Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants specialisation is offered to Bachelor of Dentistry graduates only.
The Surgical Research Specialisation is for graduates in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science registered in Australia.
The candidate's research study and dissection will be regional anatomical specialist and specialist surgeon-supervised. The chosen region of dissection will be directed to an in-depth anatomical understanding of specific human (or animal) anatomy related to their research component and/or to a chosen area of research related to their surgical specialisation (eg. anatomy related surgical approaches; grafts and flaps; vascularisation; development of prostheses, etc.).
The Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants Specialisation is for Bachelor of Dentistry graduates, registered in Australia.
Candidates for the Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants specialisation will proceed through a structured, specialist-supervised, clinical oral surgical program based upon, and similar to, the prescribed, structured oral surgery training program defined by the Specialty Advisory Committee for Oral Surgery (May 2010) of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Satisfactory completion of this prescribed curriculum is supported by a 'surgical trainee hospital log book' record of procedures performed by the trainee under specialist supervision and/or independently (as permitted by the surgeon supervisor). Completion of this specialist-supervised, structured, surgical log book and supported prescribed, coursework will prepare the student to apply for oral surgeon specialist accreditation.
Note: Students commencing with advanced standing for the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection (see Entry Requirements), and undertaking the Surgical Research specialisation, will be able to commence in Trimester 1 or Trimester 2. Students commencing with advanced standing for the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection and undertaking the Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants specialisation, or students who have not completed the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection can be admitted in Trimester 1, however will only be able to enrol in units which span Trimester 2 and Trimester 3.

| Learning Outcomes | Learning outcome information is currently unavailable for this course. |
| Graduate Attributes |
Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the discipline will taught online in ANAT600 and ANAT610, practised during the dissections in ANAT601 and ANAT611 and evaluated in all assessment tasks. Students will demonstrate an ability to teach surgical anatomy and execute surgical anatomical research on the basis of knowledge gained. The knowledge gained in the theory and dissection units will be applied by the student during the research and dissertation component of this course.
Communication Skills
Communication skills will be practised and assessed in all assessment tasks. In particular, students will develop skills in peer teaching which will be assessed by the visiting specialists during the intensive school. These skills will benefit participants' ability to communicate with both patients and peers.
Global Perspectives
The update and overview of human anatomy prior to the intensive school will expose the students to issues that have a global perspective.
Information Literacy
This Graduate Attribute will be taught, practised and assessed during the course. Students will be required to use complex multimedia and critically analyse anatomical publications which will require an high level of information literacy. Students will be supported in the use of the multimedia and the locating of reference materials. Assessment tasks will gauge the level of competence in this attribute.
Life-Long Learning
The enhanced anatomical and radiological skills will prepare surgical trainees for lifelong learning. Knowledge from this unit will generate applied cadaveric research for surgical procedures and provide informed evaluation of future publications.
Problem Solving
This Graduate Attribute is taught, practised and assessed during the course. Lectures at the commencement of each day of the intensive school in ANAT601 and ANAT611 will discuss relevant problems. During the dissection students will further progress these issues and devise solutions using anatomical surgical procedures. This will be assessed in all assessment tasks in ANAT601 and ANAT611.
Social Responsibility
This Graduate Attribute will be practised as many aspects of the learning will have implications for the social responsibility of doctors.
