This distance education course provides the opportunity for Registered Nurses to undertake postgraduate studies that specifically focus on the perioperative, emergency, intensive care, and coronary care nursing environments. As well as the nursing roles relevant to these technical and complex acute care settings, the course addresses an understanding of management issues and practices in these areas. It also provides core foundation units which will provide an opportunity for articulation into the Master of Nursing.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be currently employed as a Registered Nurse, and:
(a) hold the degree of Bachelor of Nursing; or
(b) hold a three year diploma relevant to the award; or
(c) hold the Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing from the University of New England.

Period of Candidature

For candidates admitted under Rules (a) or (b), the period of candidature shall be up to four years as a part-time candidate.

For candidates admitted under Rule (c), the period of candidature shall be up to two years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

1. (a) To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Perioperative Nursing), a candidate admitted under Rules (a) or (b) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points as specified in Rule 1.(b).
(b) The course shall comprise:
(i) all units in Group 1;
(ii) 6 credit points from Group 3.

2. (a) To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Trauma and Critical Care Nursing), a candidate admitted under Rules (a) or (b) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points as specified in Rule 2.(b).
(b) The course shall comprise:
(i) all units in Group 2;
(ii) 6 credit points from Group 3.

3. (a) To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Perioperative Nursing), a candidate admitted under Rule (c) must pass units to the value of 24 credit points as specified in Rule 3.(b).
(b) The course shall comprise all units in Group 4.

4. (a) To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Trauma and Critical Care Nursing), a candidate admitted under Rule (c) must pass units to the value of 24 credit points as specified in Rule 4.(b).
(b) The course shall comprise all units in Group 5.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements under Rules 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 shall be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Perioperative Nursing) or the Graduate Diploma in Acute Care Nursing (Trauma and Critical Care Nursing).

Progress and Conduct

Candidates are referred to the University's General Rules Policy on Academic Progress.

Improper Conduct

Candidates are referred to the Student Coursework Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct Rules.

Course Aims

This course provides Registered Nurses with the opportunity to expand their knowledge in specialist clinical areas. Students are able to specialise in critical or perioperative care. All students, irrespective of their specialism, gain an understanding of management and practices issues. The course allows for articulation into the Master of Nursing.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. critically appraise the theory and practice of acute care nursing, including a working knowledge of the critical perioperative care;
  2. critique the best available evidence as it applies to the specific area of nursing practice;
  3. evaluate and apply ethical/legal principles to practice and demonstrate respect for diversity and the differing needs of people from different cultural backgrounds and at different developmental stages; and
  4. critically reflect on their practice through engaging with health care users and inter-professional teams.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the discipline of nursing will be taught through tutorials, both peer assisted and academic facilitated online forums. It will be assessed and practised through various types of assessments.
Communication Skills
Nursing requires sound communication skills. Students will demonstrate excellent communication through online chat rooms and forums and from exemplars from their clinical practice. Students will communicate, using well-organised and logical arguments, the ideas they have developed in studying the various units within the program via their written work. Assessments will demonstrate communication of student articulation of knowledge in the area of nursing theory and practice.
Global Perspectives
Students are exposed, as global citizens, to complex international health issues. Students learn a multicultural approach to the study of advanced nursing.
Information Literacy
Students will be assessed on their skills in obtaining appropriate information for the written assignments, using case study material, traditional media and online resources.
Life-Long Learning
Students will be encouraged to see their development as advanced nurses as part of a lifelong learning process. They will be encouraged to reflect on their clinical practice, utilise clinical supervision/mentoring, and continually improve their skills.
Problem Solving
Advanced nursing practice requires complex problem-solving skills. Students apply their existing clinical skills with information literacy of nursing theory and evidence-based practices to develop a written argument about a particular issue. Assessment challenge students to apply their own critical appraisal of the health concerns in question.
Social Responsibility
Students are taught to consider their social responsibility through competent ethical and legal practices. Nursing is steeped in the values of social justice and students will be assessed in terms of their ability to help others whatever their circumstances.
Team Work
Nursing is by nature a team driven profession. Students will enhance their existing team skills via the online forums and chat rooms. Students will be assessed on their translation of their studies to clinical inter-professional health care teams in their area of practice.
