Graduate Certificate in History Curriculum

Why study the Graduate Certificate in History Curriculum at UNE?

The course comprises studies in history and education pedagogy focused on the needs of teaching the new Australian National Curriculum in History. The course covers the understanding, knowledge and appreciation of history as a discipline and helps the teacher explore how history orders and makes events, practices and ideas intelligible. The course also covers the study of education pedagogy, focusing on curriculum decision-making, resource critique and development, inquiry learning and authentic assessment. Units of study encourage a critical and open attitude to history; offer a breadth of methods and theories that characterize history as a discipline; offer a wide choice of areas of study ranging from the ancient past to the modern world; and provide opportunities for the student to closely examine their current pedagogical and content knowledge, adapt or adopt contemporary skills and understandings, and engage in activities and assessment tasks directly linked to their classroom practice. This course can only be completed on a part-time basis.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a three or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or

(b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University.

International students must meet the University's English language requirements.

Advanced Standing

At the discretion of the school, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for:

(a) up to 12 credit points on the basis of units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or

(b) up to 12 credit points on the basis of postgraduate units that have not been counted towards any qualification provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program

Period of Candidature

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points.

Award of Degree

Course Aims

The Graduate Certificate in History Curriculum aims to up-skill primary and secondary teachers in the knowledge and skills needed to teach history, according to the needs of the new National Curriculum, in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an awareness of history as an essential characteristic of any society, the study of which deepens our understanding of humanity, creativity, purposes and values;
  2. develop an understanding of history as a distinctive and indispensable form of knowledge, characterised by a range of methodologies and theories;
  3. acquire knowledge of a range of historical periods and places stretching from the distant past to the present that provides a deeper understanding of present-day events and enables us to see the world through the eyes of others;
  4. critically examine experiences as History learners, including the myths of children's historical thinking abilities, and articulate philosophy of History and History learning and teaching;
  5. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of various inquiry models in order to develop in students the skills of inquiry, including professional standards of communication and information literacy;
  6. explain the difference between assessment for learning, assessment of learning, assessment through learning, and to design appropriate History assessment.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
As a professional development course, this award will teach knowledge of history and its teaching requirements for the needs of the new National Curriculum. This will involve units on history content and methodology taught at a postgraduate level, and education pedagogy taught at a postgraduate level.
Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills: a) through assignment work which must express well organised and logical arguments to study and explore historical problems. b) through written feedback on the assignments for the units. through participation in online discussions. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will create specific material for the classroom.
Global Perspectives
The Graduate Certificate has, at its heart a global perspective. Students will study why and how history is characteristic of any society and how historical knowledge is fundamental to understanding ourseves and others and foundational to many other disciplines.
Information Literacy
Students will be taught the methodologies that produce history as a distinctive body of knowledge. Students will develop research skills in collecting and evaluating data, including the skills to assess the utility of information, identify the most useful sources of information and critically examine these sources.
Life-Long Learning
Through completing the assessments, students will not only be practising independent learning skills, but will be applying knowledge and methods to the needs of the new National Curriculum. The skills and knowledge gained can be applied to the ongoing class preparation needed.
Problem Solving
Assignments will be focused on the needs of the new National Curriculum and so students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise problems and formulate a range of solutions to emerging needs of the classroom. Students will need to collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving (practice).
Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to engage in balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to assessment and discussions in online postings.
Team Work
Students will work collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the discussion board (Blackboard) taking the initiative and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion board and in their own assessment tasks.
