Why study the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies at UNE?
This course is designed for professionals to study in depth a range of areas related to education. Participants may choose units from across areas or specialise in the areas of
Literature and New Literacies, Careers and Transition Education, Educational Leadership or Comparative Education. Some units are related to the school curriculum, however these units are not intended for the purposes of teacher preparation in any particular method. Units from other Graduate Certificates such as e-Learning; Indigenous Australian Education; International Schooling, Education and Development; School Leadership; Special Education; TESOL; and Gifted and Talented Education can also be taken in this course.
The course also provides a pathway for candidates to pursue Master of Education study as some specialisations articulate with corresponding Master of Education specialisations.

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Across various units in this award, there are school and workplace engagement which embeds the learning in a relevant educational and professional context. | Advanced Standing | At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for: (a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University; (b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and (c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University. |

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:

Advanced Standing
At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the course coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:
(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;
(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and
(c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 0.5 year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to two years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 400- or 500-level.

Award of Degree
A candidate who meets the course requirements shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies.
A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes the units EDEE518, EDEE520, EDEE521 and EDEE523 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Literature and New Literacies).
A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes the units EDUC506, EDUC507, HSHM421 and either EDSP462 or EDSP244 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Career and Transition Education).
A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes the units EDCX573, EDCX575, EDCX576 and either EDSL515 or EDSL581 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Comparative Education).
A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes the units EDCX573, EDCX575, EDCX576 and either EDSL515 or EDSL581 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Educational Leadership).

Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of discipline is taught in all units. It is assessed in different ways including online assessment tasks, essays, quizzes and exams. It is practiced in some units in professional experience activities.
Communication Skills
Communication skills are an important part of most units. Written and oral skills are taught, assessed and practiced through a variety of online and face-to-face activities.
Global Perspectives
Several units have a specific focus on global perspectives in a range of educational disciplines. In these units students are taught to explore different perspectives and are assessed on their understanding of those perspectives.
Information Literacy
Information literacy is explicitly taught, assessed and practiced in some units. In other units, students use a variety of online tools to engage with learning material and respond to assessment tasks.
Life-Long Learning
Students in this postgraduate course are expected to build on their existing professional knowledge and skills and to explore ways to apply that knowledge throughout their professional life. This is taught through learning activities which have a focus on individuals' professional contexts.
Problem Solving
Problem solving is taught, assessed and practiced in some units. Most units require students to practice problem-solving techniques to develop responses to assessment tasks.
Social Responsibility
Some units in this course have a specific focus on social responsibility as it relates to the discipline of education. In these units social responsibility is taught, assessed and practiced.
Team Work
In most units, students will explore aspects of team work as it applies to their field of study. In some units, features of effective team work will be taught and students will be assessed on activities involving a requirement to work in teams.
