Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a three or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or

(b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University; or

(c) hold a three year degree of a University approved by the School; or

(d) satisfy the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature; and

(e) comply with the University's English Language requirements.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Students integrate ICT in their profession.

Advanced Standing

At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:

(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;

(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and

(c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University.

To qualify for the award, and except with the permission of the School, a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 500-level.

OUA admitted students
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 500-level.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. investigate and apply theories of and research findings about learning and teaching in an elearning environment;
  2. design, manage and evaluate elearning environments based on learner needs;
  3. apply strategies to address ethical, legal and social issues related to elearning;
  4. evaluate and implement a range of strategies that use elearning tools to address specific learner needs and to assess student learning; and
  5. design elearning environments that facilitate a sense of community.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of elearning environments and the related ICT tools are a key focus in the teaching. Students practice this knowledge through their engagement in online learning activities. Knowledge of discipline is mainly assessed through its application.
Communication Skills
Students are explicitly taught about online communication but have opportunities to practice a variety of communication skills including writing reports, posting to forums and wikis, chatting via text and participating in a virtual environment. These skills are assessed through a variety of report-style and online-contribution assessment tasks.
Global Perspectives
Students are taught to expand their conceptions beyond their own sphere of experience and have the opportunity to practice this through online activities that connect with others both nationally and internationally. These perspectives are assessed through their researching and responses to the various assessment tasks.
Information Literacy
Students are taught to evaluate and appreciate the limitations of various sources of knowledge and have the opportunity to practice this through being encouraged to use a full range of sources of information. This literacy is assessed through the variety of knowledge sources needed to accomplish the varied range of assessment tasks.
Life-Long Learning
Students are taught to develop communication, thinking and research skills that will last well beyond their period of candidature. There are varied opportunities for the students to practice these skills and develop an appreciation of the need for further learning. The assessment tasks encourage intellectual curiosity.
Problem Solving
Students are taught to identify and analyse critical issues and to think logically but creatively in developing solutions. Students practice this through opportunities provided to deal with a wide range of situations that are relevant to elearning environments. This is assessed through planning and operational activities and demonstration of the ability to deconstruct situations.
Social Responsibility
Students are taught the importance of social responsibility through the professional responsibilities of teaching and practice this by challenging the use of elearning tools in learning environments. This is assessed through certain perspectives taken in assessment tasks.
Team Work
Students are taught to take certain roles in learning activities and practice this by collaborating in a variety of online activities. Team work is assessed through the negotiation required in online participation.
