Why study the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Teaching at UNE?

This Course will provide students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their clinical education skills and knowledge at a postgraduate level. It is a flexible distance education program which allows students to study a course that equips them with the ability to design and deliver appropriate clinical education opportunities across a range of health care disciplines and contexts.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) have successfully completed a relevant AQF equivalent Bachelor degree from a recognized university in Australia or overseas; or

(b) have satisfied the school by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature; and

c) international students must meet the University's English Language Requirements.

Additional Requirements

Students will either be admitted at UNE or Southern Cross University and study 50% or more of the course at their host institution. The remainder of the course will be completed via cross-institutional enrolment.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing of 6 credit points may be granted for students who have successfully completed the Clinical Simulation and Skill Development in Health Curricula course offered by University of New England Partnerships (UNEP).

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 0.5 year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to two years as a part-time candidate.

To qualify for the award and except with the permission of the School, a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points and candidates must complete at least 50% of their units from the University of New England

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Teaching.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to prepare health professionals for clinical education roles.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate current knowledge of clinical education and teaching strategies and models and integrate these for application in the healthcare industry;
  2. recognise the roles of clinical educators and apply learning strategies to roles in clinical education settings;
  3. evaluate and discuss contemporary social, political and professional expectations of clinical education roles;
  4. demonstrate the ability to read, understand and critically review relevant scholarly and research papers;
  5. prepare oral and written reports to a level appropriate for clinical educators.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Teaching enhances knowledge of the scope of clinical education roles in clinical healthcare settings and prepares graduates, from a diverse range of clinical backgrounds, to assume such roles. This knowledge is taught, practiced and assessed across the unit content and via written, oral and experiential assessments throughout this course.
Communication Skills
Communication is taught practiced and assessed in this course. Via distanced education students will practice their abilities to communicate on a professional level. This will include the development of literature reviews, reports, presentations and online and work-based projects to assess communication.
Global Perspectives
Students will be exposed to relevant international literature and recent research papers regarding the dynamic clinical education roles in healthcare settings. Students will be taught to evaluate local, national and international trends in clinical education and practise critically reviewing and different educational approaches in a number of their assessment tasks.
Information Literacy
Students will be assessed on their skill in accessing appropriate resources via a range of information technologies, e.g. web-sites and e-journal databases. Most of the units will be offered with a substantial online component requiring students to practise accessing relevant content and interacting online.
Life-Long Learning
Education provided in this course will allow students to build on their foundational knowledge of clinical education roles in healthcare, by enhancing their self-directed learning skills, such as how to search for and critically review relevant information.
Problem Solving
This course will provide a strong emphasis on problem-solving and students will be taught via a number of case-studies, where they will practise and apply their knowledge to potential clinical education problems. These abilities will be assessed via written assignments and online discussions.
Social Responsibility
A major component of this course is building skills in clinical education that equip graduates to effectively lead the delivery of clinical teaching and support for other clinical staff to provide high quality patient care.
Team Work
The interprofessional focus of this course reflects the team-based approach to healthcare that is gaining momentum globally across all health disciplines. In particular effective clinical teaching is based on facilitating team-work, so that clinicians work together effectively to provide high quality care for patients. Students will be taught and assessed on their ability to look beyond their own disciplinary background, in written assignments, practical exercises and and discussions.
