Why study the Graduate Certificate in Arts Management at UNE?

Arts management is one of the fastest growing areas in the arts, performing arts education, Indigenous arts sector, non-profit sector, tourism and local government. UNE's Graduate Certificate in Arts Management is a course for those who work in arts management or related fields. The course develops essential knowledge and skills for arts managers in law, accounting and finance, management, and professional arts practice.

The Graduate Certificate in Arts Management has been designed to meet the needs of those who must accommodate study around other demands on their time: it is offered in off-campus mode, it may be completed in two trimesters (full-time) or up to two years (part-time), and it enables students to 'even out' their study load.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:
(a) hold a bachelors degree or equivalent; or
(b) have at least three years' relevant work experience in a field of employment approved by the Head, School of Arts. Possession of a first degree is not essential.

Advanced Standing

Candidates may apply for up to 12 credit points of advanced standing.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be up to two years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Arts Management.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to work as effective managers within the arts and arts-related fields.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. understand and apply principles of law, accounting and finance, management and professional arts practice to a wide range of arts- and arts management-based disciplines;
  2. plan and organize a project independently while working under supervision;
  3. apply enhanced skills of information literacy for undertaking projects in arts management;
  4. evaluate a range of scholarly and policy sources and the basis and limits of their authority;
  5. apply advanced writing skills in conducting coursework and research in arts-based disciplines and communicating outcomes in appropriate forms;
  6. participate in informed debate on a range of academic and professional issues in arts management, in both familiar and new contexts.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
Arts management is a very broad area. The core units are designed to give graduates an overview of and basic skills in management, accounting, finance, relevant legal studies and professional arts practice. Assessment in the core units GSB702, GSB748, GSB721, GSB731, ECT503, ENCO506, WORK500 and ARTS501 is typically by examination and/or written report/essay.
Communication Skills
Students will be expected to attain and demonstrate a high level of academic writing skills assessed in most of these units by examination, report or essay. Many units also require contributions to Blackboard discussions. Higher-level research and writing skills are required in specific units such as ECT503, ENCO506 and ARTS501.
Global Perspectives
Students are expected to appreciate global perspectives and their appreciation of such perspectives is assessed in several units including ENCO506 and GSB748.
Information Literacy
The course is offered in off-campus mode with online components. As this is a postgraduate course, basic information literacy is expected in all units and more advanced skills are taught and assessed in specific units including GSB748 and ECT503.
Life-Long Learning
Lifelong learning is encouraged and practised but not necessarily assessed in specific units. The GradCert exit point does, however, open up the possibility of a GradCert graduate returning at a later stage to complete the Master of Arts Management.
Problem Solving
Problem solving is taught and assessed in specific units including GSB702 and GSB748.
Social Responsibility
Social responsibility is taught and assessed in specific units including GSB748 and ECT503.
Team Work
Teamwork concepts and practices are taught and assessed in specific units including GSB721 and GSB731.
