Trimester 3 entry is for international pathway students only.

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and professional nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete the first two years of full-time study have the option to exit with an Advanced Diploma in Nursing, and eligibility to seek Enrolled Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Students who successfully complete 3 years of full-time study exit with a Bachelor of Nursing and eligibility to seek Registered Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

In addition, Endorsed Enrolled Nurses who enter at the beginning of the second year of the course and successfully complete 2 years of full-time study may receive a Bachelor of Nursing and eligibility for Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Asutralia.

The course is offered full-time or part-time on-campus in 1st year, then it is offered full or part-time, via 'Blended Learning' mode* in 2nd and 3rd year. The course aims to give graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a postgraduate level.

A central aim is to prepare graduate nurses for enrolment and/or registration as professional nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

* Blended learning refers to a combination of mandatory on-campus intensive schools, structured online learning and clinical practice blocks

Students who do not meet traditional entry requirements for most undergraduate nursing courses may seek to enter the UNE nursing courses via interview.

Articulated Award

Students can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 96 credit points and be eligible to apply for Endorsed Enrolled Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This enables them to seek employment as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse. For those who choose to continue with study in the BN, this qualification will assist them to cope financially with their final year of study.

Students can then continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

3 years (144 credit points)

(a) (i) be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy), and

(ii) if admitted on the basis of an Australian school-leaving qualification, have achieved a standard set by the school in English and a science subject in that school-leaving qualification; or

2 years (96 credit points)

(b) be an Enrolled Nurse on List A in NSW and hold an endorsed Certificate in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) with medication endorsement, or equivalent under the Australian Quality Framework; or

2 years 3 months (108 credit points)

(c) for international students hold a minimum 2 year FTE post-secondary Diploma in Nursing and be registered, licensed or recognised in their own country as registered or a professional nurse in the last ten years; and who can also meet English language entry requirements of IELTS 6.5; or

1 year (48 credit points)

(d) hold the University of New England Advanced Diploma in Nursing; or

3 years (144 credit points)

(e) successfully undertake an interview conducted by a panel of UNE academic registered nurses.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must have a current First Aid Certificate which is WorkCover approved. This certificate should be completed before commencing study.

Before commencing study and prior to attendance at UNE students need to ensure that they are appropriately vaccinated as per NSW Health policy. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/immunisation/ohs/

NSW Health require all students to be fully vaccinated and provide evidence of their vaccination status plus provide evidence of protection against the following: adult diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, hepatitis B (all hepatitis B vaccinations must have been completed well before the commencement of the course), measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox). Screening for for tuberculosis will be organised at UNE.

Provide evidence of National Criminal History Record Check and obtain a National Police Certificate. Students can apply either locally through State or Territory Police Services or the Australian Federal Police and pay the relevant fee. http://www.afp.gov.au/business/national_police_checks.html

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Candidates must complete 16-25 weeks of clinical practice, which is undertaken in each trimester in health facilities in NSW. Clinical practice has been organised in block placements of two to four weeks throughout the six trimesters of the course. Clinical placements occur in most area health services of NSW.

Advanced Standing

Applications for advanced standing cannot be assessed unless the units that you are seeking credit for are complete. If you are currently enrolled in a course and will not receive the results before the advanced standing closing dates please submit a new application once you have obtained the results.

Nursing students who seek Advanced Standing based on previous nursing studies undertaken at UNE or another university are assessed not just on unit equivalence but also on recency of study and clinical practice. If previous studies are more than three years old, students may be required to repeat portions of the equivalent unit, in particular the clinical practice requirements. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW.

Honours

The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours is open to practising Registered Nurses with a Bachelor of Nursing degree with a grade point average specified by the Faculty.

(a) two years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to five years as a part-time candidate.

3. For candidates admitted under Rule (c), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) two and a half years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to five and a half years as a part-time candidate.

4. For candidates admitted under Rule (d), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

1. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rules (a) and (e) must pass units to the value of 144 credit points.

2. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (b) must pass units to the value of 96 credit points.

3. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (c) must pass units to the value of 108 credit points.

4. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (d) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Nursing.

Articulated Award

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates admitted under Rule(a) or (e) can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 96 credit points comprising units HHSC146, 147, 246, 247; HSNS112, 113, 114, 121, 122, 123, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230 and continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature.

Candidates admitted under Rule (b) can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 48 credit points comprising units HHSC246, 247; HSNS201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230 and continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature.

Exit Pathways

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing under Rule (a) or (e) and who apply to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon completion of 96 credit points comprising units HHSC146, 147, 246, 247; HSNS 112, 113, 114, 121, 122, 123, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230.

Candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing under Rule (b) and who apply to discontinue their studies may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 48 credit points comprising units HHSC246, 247; HSNS201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230.

Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing must apply for re-admission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Nursing. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University or external accreditation body requirements.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to prepare students who are eligible for enrolment or registration as professional nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and who are equipped with adequate knowledge and skills for the practice of nursing at the advanced diploma and/or bachelor levels. They will be educated to assume the role of a beginning professional practitioner in a variety of health care settings and to provide evidence-based, creative, sensitive and responsible nursing care to the clients with whom they work. The course also aims to produce graduates who appreciate the value of life-long learning and who have a firm foundation for further study at either the undergraduate or postgraduate levels.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. provide safe, thoughtful, creative, responsive and evidence-based nursing care at a beginning practitioner level;
  2. apply the appropriate knowledge and skills to the provision of nursing care to people in a variety of health care settings;
  3. demonstrate an appreciation and respect of the rights of individual people to make choices regarding their own health and the care they receive;
  4. demonstrate support, facilitative skills and advocacy for vulnerable people who are unable to make or implement choices for themselves by virtue of their condition;
  5. exhibit an understanding of nurses' roles in the provision of primary health care and the importance of education for health and health promotion
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the role of the nurse as change agent within the health care system, and
  7. maintain and extend their nursing knowledge and skills by a process of experiential learning, reading and research.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
Students progressively develop a sound knowledge of the discipline of nursing in preparation for their roles as professional nurses through participation in online and face-to-face learning activities and clinical practice. Knowledge of the discipline will be assessed through, written assignments, on-line tests, examinations, assessment of clinical skills in the clinical laboratory.
Communication Skills
Global Perspectives
Students will engage in learning activities in which global perspectives of nursing practice will be discussed and debated. They wil be expected to show their understanding of the global nature of nursing in written assessments and demonstrate this understanding on assessed clinical placements.
Information Literacy
Information literacy is practised and assessed through the assignment tasks attached to each unit of the course. Students are taught research skills, and how to access and assess information from a variety of online and paper based information sources.
Life-Long Learning
Students are required to set ongoing learning objectives at each stage of the course and as they prepare to transition to practice and to progessively refine their plan for continuing professional development in their nursing career. These approaches to life long learning will be assessed in the student's professional portfolios and in practice on clinical placements.
Problem Solving
Students are taught problem-solving skills as they engage with issues of clinical governance and practise development in online, face-to-face and clinical practice activities. Their ability to solve problems is assessed across all assessment tasks in the course.
Social Responsibility
Students learn about and develop the capacity to make ethically sound, morally just and socially responsible decisions in all the nursing units of this course. They apply this knowledge specifically to patient advocacy, safety and quality issues. They are assessed on this knowledge across all assessment tasks and apply it in practice while on assessed clinical placements.
Team Work
Students are taught theories of team dynamics and teamwork as they relate to a range of health care settings in the all nursing units of this course. They participate as members of a health care team during their assessed clinical placements.
