Why study the Bachelor of Media and Communications at UNE?

The degree develops knowledge of communication technologies in various cultural, social and historical contexts. Graduates will understand and apply a range of disciplinary methods for studying specific communications media (print, audio and audiovisial, electronic), the changing relations between them and their role in modern society.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is any two units of English.

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Media and Communications on the basis of previous tertiary study.

Students who have completed a Diploma of Screen from TAFE New England are eligible for 72 credit points of advanced standing towards this degree. Students who have completed an Advanced Diploma of Screen from TAFE New England are eligible for 96 credit points of advanced standing towards this degree.

Honours

Candidates who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Media and Communications may, on the recommendation of the head of school concerned, continue to an honours year. The honours program shall include advanced coursework and a dissertation.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 36 credit points at 300-level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one approved major shall be awarded the Bachelor of Media and Communications.

Exit Pathways

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates who apply to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Arts on completion of 48 credit points. Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Diploma in Arts must apply for re-admission and will be subject to current course requirements for the Bachelor of Media and Communications. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University requirements.

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates who apply to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Arts on completion of 72 credit points, including 36 credit points at 200/300-level. Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Advanced Diploma in Arts must apply for re-admission and will be subject to current course requirements for the Bachelor of Media and Communications. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University requirements.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. understand and apply a range of disciplinary methods for studying specific communications media (eg. print, audio and audiovisual, electronic);
  2. analyse and critically evaluate the changing relations between various media platforms and their role in modern society; and
  3. apply a range of media understandings and/or competencies to the communication of knowledge gained in approved electives from a range of related disciplines such as history, literature, theatre, sociology, political science, or psychology.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
Students' knowledge and understanding of the discipline of Media and Communication Studies will be developed, including those specific to such forms as print, audio and audiovisual and electronic and the ability to understand and evaluate their contributions to modern society. These will be taught and assessed through a range of critical and creative, written and practical tasks.
Communication Skills
Communication skills will be taught or enhanced through learning and assessment processes related to academic, professional and creative writing. These skills will be brought to bear on a range of cultural issues including those of responsible reporting and representation, effective and ethical uses of written and audiovisual communication technologies.
Global Perspectives
A wide range of global perspectives will be engaged with as students variously view, analyse and contribute to representations of and commentaries on events and cultural practices selected from local, national and international media texts.
Information Literacy
Students' skills and knowledge of the use and wider applications of print, audio and audiovisual, and Internet/electronic will be developed in teaching and learning contexts online and/or face-to-face. Such literacy will be demonstrated and, when appropriate, assessed, in written essays and other communications media.
Life-Long Learning
Through knowledge and skills related to interacting with and the evaluation of cultural media information in communications and media, students are equipped for ongoing, meaningful interactions with communications and media.
Problem Solving
Approaches to problem solving are demonstrated in discussions, interpretation and the formation of arguments in set reading materials. They are also practised and assessed in various units of study within the course.
Social Responsibility
This course requires students to actively and critically engage in issues of social responsibility. This occurs in numerous units concerned with such issues as responsible news reporting, equitable and ethical representations of identities and cultures, implications of social media and forms of communication that are accessible and appropriate to diverse audiences.
Team Work
Online students engage in learning through discussions with their cohort and on-campus students can engage in this as well as work together on small, in-class projects. Students also learn about production teams and collaborative processes that exist in many media outlets and forms of communication.
