Why study the Bachelor of Financial Administration at UNE?

This course is only available in 2013 to International Pathway Students.

The Bachelor of Financial Administration is an Accredited Undergraduate Course of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia and Institute of Public Accountants. The degree covers introductory as well as advanced level units in financial and management accounting, finance, auditing, company and taxation law, information systems, economics and business statistics, while still allowing flexibility to engage with other subject areas to complement your accounting focus. This is the degree for students who want to pursue a career in accounting, but still have some flexibility to study in related areas.

The Bachelor of Financial Administration provides the opportunity for an exciting career in accounting, a field that offers challenge, variety and job satisfaction; an opportunity to travel and work overseas and the opportunity to diversify your career into various sectors of the business community.

Career Opportunities

Examples include positions in accounting, financial administration in corporate organisations, auditing, stockbroking, investment advising, small and medium enterprise management and careers in government departments such as trade and industry.

There are three major professional accounting bodies in Australia: CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). In order to satisfy the educational requirements for admission to the major professional accounting bodies, it is necessary to complete the following units in addition to the compulsory units for the degree: Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing, Principles of Corporation Law, Principles of Taxation Law.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is any two units of English. For some units in the economics, finance and quantitative areas it is recommended that students have previously studied mathematics. Also Accounting, Economics and Business.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level; at least 36 credit points at 300-level of which 24 credit points shall comprise units with an AFM prefix; and not more than 36 credit points from units outside the Faculty of the Professions.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Financial Administration.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Business on completion of 48 credit points.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. enter the field of Accounting with knowledge and skills in financial and management accounting, finance, auditing, company and taxation law, information systems, economics and business statistics;
  2. satisfy the educational requirements for admission to the major professional accounting bodies; and
  3. follow a career in Accounting or diversify into other areas of the Business profession.

Demonstrate extended command of a significant body of knowledge of the accounting and finance disciplines, including technical knowledge, to facilitate a career in accounting and finance and entry into further professional development and professional practice. Graduates who complete the appropriate units will cover the discipline knowledge included in the core curriculum areas required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Communication Skills
Communicate effectively to wider stakeholder groups using appropriate and diverse written, verbal, numerical, statistical, graphical and visual methods to both communicate technical information as well as build rapport with clients, colleagues and others whilst recognising the particular importance of the issues of disclosure of adequate information and reporting and transparency in the accounting and finance professions. Graduates who complete the appropriate units will be able to demonstrate proficiency of the generic skills required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Global Perspectives
Demonstrate an awareness of the global context of and international developments within the finance discipline, including ASIC regulations and international regulatory frameworks in the financial sector, such as IOSCO. Graduates who complete the appropriate units will be able to demonstrate proficiency of the generic skills required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Information Literacy
Demonstrate the ability to identify accounting and finance issues and problems and to collect, organise, analyse, present and evaluate relevant information using appropriate formats, methods and techniques for the finance discipline, both in domestic and international contexts. Graduates who complete the appropriate units will be able to demonstrate proficiency of the generic skills required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Life-Long Learning
Engage in self directed and reflective learning in the workforce or through further study, with personal strategies for lifelong professional development and learning to acquire knowledge for multi-dimensional strategic thinking.
