Why study the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) at UNE?

The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in accounting and/or finance, either as an accountant in private practice or employed in industry, commerce or the public sector. It allows students to major solely in Professional Accounting, or both Professional Accounting and Applied Finance and provides you with the knowledge and technical skills you need to succeed in the accounting/finance field.

This is the degree to take you straight into the accounting profession. Students can satisfy the educational requirements for admission to the major professional accounting bodies (CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA)) by including relevant units in their program of study.

The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) provides you with the opportunity for an exciting career in accounting, a field that offers challenge, variety and job satisfaction; an opportunity to travel and work overseas and the opportunity to diversify your career into various sectors of the business community.

Career Opportunities

This degree allows accreditation with the three major professional accounting bodies in Australia: CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).

Trimester 3 provides an opportunity for students to fast track their academic progression or to catch up on units required to complete their degree. A selection of units is offered off campus during this period, enabling students to study from home and to accelerate their progress towards graduation.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is any two units of English.

Recommended studies: Any two units of Mathematics. For some units in the economics, finance and quantitative statistics areas it is recommended that students have previously studied mathematics. Also Accounting, Economics and Business.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Students may undertake the Work Ready unit as an elective unit.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing may be granted for relevant qualifications or studies.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 36 credit points at 300-level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one mandatory major or one mandatory major and one approved major shall be awarded the Bachelor of Commere - Accounting.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Business on completion of 48 credit points.

  1. enter and succeed in the accounting/finance field with the necessary knowledge and technical skills;

Demonstrate effective command of specialist knowledge of the accounting discipline, including technical knowledge, to facilitate a career in accounting and entry into further professional development and professional practice. Graduates' discipline knowledge will cover the core curriculum areas required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Communication Skills
Communicate extensively to a range of stakeholders using appropriate and diverse written, verbal, numerical, statistical, graphical and visual methods to both communicate technical information as well as build rapport with clients, colleagues and others, whilst recognising the particular importance of the issues of disclosure of adequate information and reporting and transparency in the accounting profession. Graduates will be able to demonstrate proficiency of the generic skills required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Global Perspectives
Demonstrate an awareness of the global perspectives of and international developments within the accounting discipline, including international regulatory frameworks in the accounting and auditing areas, such as the possible convergence of US GAAP and IFRS, and the GRI vision of disclosure in economic, environmental and social performance. Graduates will be able to demonstrate proficiency of the generic skills required by the ICAA and CPA Australia.
Information Literacy
Demonstrate the ability to identify accounting and finance issues and problems and to collect, organise, analyse, present and evaluate relevant information using appropriate formats, methods and techniques for the accounting discipline, both in domestic and international contexts. Graduates also become aware of the importance of sustainability with regard to economic, environmental and social performance and the respective reporting requirements as it applies to their accounting career.
