Assumed knowledge is two units in English plus Mathematics.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Students may complete the Work Ready unit as an elective unit.

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for advanced standing towards the degree on the basis of previous tertiary study.

Fast Track

Trimester 3 provides an opportunity for students to fast-track their academic progression or to catch up on units required to complete the degree.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) four years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 192 credit points with not more than 84 credit points at 100-level and at least 48 credit points at 300-level.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

If units are taken that are common to both Majors then the candidate must complete additional units drawn from the Listed Units of either Major in order to complete the 36 credit points for the Major.

Restricted Majors

The following are restricted combinations of Majors. Candidates can only include ONE of the Majors in their program of study.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one Business major and one Economics major shall be awarded the Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Economics.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Business on completion of 48 credit points, of which at least 36 credit points must be from the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to transfer from the Combined Degree Program to either the Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Economics.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. BBus component: discuss the theory behind, and key elements of, the component functions of the core business fields of Accounting, Economics, Finance, Organisational Development, Management and Marketing needed for organisational survival and success;
  2. contribute to economic policy formulation and discussions;
  3. understand, analyse and use quantitative data to assist in making economic, business and policy decisions; and
  4. identify and explain major ethical and social responsibilities theories and concepts.
  5. BEc component: demonstrate understanding and application of economic concepts and processes and be able to contribute to economic policy formulation and discussions;
  6. demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  7. understand, analyse and use quantitative data to assist in making economic, business and policy decisions;
  8. prepare coherent written statements and make oral presentations;
  9. demonstrate understanding of the global economic environment in which business and governments operate; and
  10. understand the social and ethical issues in relation to their particular disciplinary areas.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline
BBus: Students will learn about the management and law disciplines, and practise responding to real case situations. BEc: Demonstrate extended command of advanced knowledge in the discipline areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic history, business statistics and mathematics and their practical policy application.
Communication Skills
BBus: Students are required to demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, using diverse written, verbal and visual methods as appropriate; read, critique and judge the value and contribution of written work; and present well-reasoned arguments and illustrate when necessary with relevant examples. BEc: Demonstrate the ability to employ a range of presentation and delivery styles, including diagrammatic forms and correct terminology, to communicate effectively and appropriately with professionals, peers, clients and other members of the public.
Global Perspectives
BBus: Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges of operating in a global economy; describe the opportunities and threats for managers and lawyers operating in a global context. BEc: Demonstrate an awareness of the global context and international application of the economic discipline.
Information Literacy
BBus: Students are required to recognise the contribution of the work of others to their own work; reference the use of others' work accurately ; and access and use a number of diverse literature resources. BEc: Demonstrate competence in the use of a range of technologies to find, organise and analyse information effectively and efficiently, with particular competence in the use, interpretation and construction of economic and quantitative data to communicate and manage its application, with an emphasis on policy application.
Life-Long Learning
BBus: The unit outcomes comprising the course are relevant both professionally and personally on an ongoing basis. BEc: Engage in self-directed learning in the workforce or further study through strategies for lifelong professional development and learning, both independently and cooperatively, to enable them to respond appropriately to complex, unfamiliar and unexpected challenges.
Problem Solving
BBus: Students are required to demonstrate decision-making skills in the analysis of work-based scenarios and organisational problems; and demonstrate an understanding of the changing context for managers and lawyers in the 21st century. BEc: Apply logical and critical thinking to identify and solve problems, particularly through the appropriate application of discipline knowledge to real-world situations.
Social Responsibility
BBus: Students are required to demonstrate an understanding and application of characteristics of professional conduct, integrity and ethics for managers and lawyers; and demonstrate an understanding of and the application of social responsibility actions in strategic decision-making. BEc: Demonstrate the ability to acknowledge and respect other viewpoints, to behave ethically and how to appreciate and value the environment and sustainability throughout their learning process. Graduates will be able to demonstrate respect for, and correct acknowledgement of, ideas and knowledge of others.
Team Work
BBus: This course requires students to demonstrate the ability to work in teams in class or in online groups. BEc: Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary group to achieve common goals and to solve problems, to contribute specialist knowledge as required and to take responsibility and initiative to contribute to group performance.
