Knowledge of a Discipline
An understanding of basic genetic principles with application to various world situations are taught, practised and assessed throughout the unit.

Communication Skills
Various communication skills will be taught, practised and assessed through presentation of assessment tasks over the semester and feedback given to guide students in their development. Presentation skills will be developed as students present their modules to their class and their report is to include feedback from their students as part of their reflective process.

Global Perspectives
Where students choose genetic issues (Assignment four) these need to be applicable globally and they need to discuss evidence of global controversial issues and are marked accordingly. Global issues may also be included in the teaching module created in assignment three.

Information Literacy
The preparation of the media and application reviews will require the use of TV, radio, newspapers, internet and scientific journals as information resources. Online resources will be used for class discussions and accessing unit material. Information literacy is specifically assessed in Assignments two, three and four.

Life-Long Learning
Learning to use computer-based technologies, critical thinking, problem solving skills and applications to assist all aspects of life. Particularly assignment three requires self reflection of their own learning and teaching practices.

Problem Solving
Students will be taught how to approach various genetic problems and be expected to expand their skills to solve new problems. They will also need to display this ability by guiding their own students through the process. These skills are demonstrated throught the semester and assessed in Assignments one and three (especially relating to designing the module plan).

Social Responsibility
The unit will cover such social issues as the use of genetics for forensics, agriculture and medicine applicable to senior high school syllibi. This is specifically assessed in Assignment four on their ability to identify ethical aspects of the topic and apply it to their own working context.
