Why study the Master of Information Technology (Business) at UNE?

The Master of Information Technology (Business) is a conversion course that will enable students to gain professional qualifications in information technology. It is a coursework only degree designed for students who do not have a computing background and who are seeking to achieve qualifications in information technology as well as an understanding of the fundamental principles of business. Such applicants may gain entry via completion of the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology.

Please note: this course was previously known as Master of Information Technology (Extended).

Graduates of the degree will have skills in design and development of software systems; systems analysis; database programming; IT project management; and programming of financial systems.

The Master of Information Technology (Business) has been granted provisional Professional Level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society.

Articulation from the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology, Graduate Diploma in Information Technology and the Master of Information Technology:On completion of the Graduate Certificate, students are able to articulate to the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology with 24 credit points advanced standing from units completed towards the Graduate Certificate.

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Information Technology (Business) with 48 credit points advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.

On completion of the Master of Information Technology, students are able to articulate to the Master of Information Technology (Business) with 72 credit points advanced standing for units completed towards the Master.

Entry Requirements

1. A candidate shall:

(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a Bachelor degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution; or

(b) have completed the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology or any graduate certificate as approved by the course coordinator; or

(c) have completed the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or any graduate diploma as approved by the course coordinator.

2. An applicant for candidature shall apply to the Program Director on the prescribed form.

3. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of candidature shall be determined by the School.

4. After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a program of study approved by the course coordinator.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).

1. The course coordinator may grant a candidate advanced standing for:

(a) up to 48 credit points on the basis of units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another university provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program and, if the candidate does not have a first degree; provided a minimum of Credit grade average is achieved in such units to the value of 24 credit points; or

(b) up to 48 credit points on the basis of postgraduate units that have not been counted towards any qualification provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or

(c) up to 24 credit points for other significant learning which the School considers equivalent to units prescribed for the course work program; or

(d) up to 24 credit points for units completed towards the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology or an appropriate Graduate Certificate and, if the candidate does not have a first degree, provided a minimum of Credit grade average is achieved in these units; or

(e) up to 48 credit points for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or an appropriate Graduate Diploma.

2. The course coordinator may grant a candidate advanced standing for up to 72 credit points for units completed towards the Master of Information Technology or equivalent at this University and not otherwise counted towards the Master of Information Technology (Business).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be two years as a full-time candidate.

Where the prescribed program of study has been reduced in terms of Admission Rule 1(b) or 1(c), the period of candidature may be reduced accordingly.
In exceptional circumstances and on the basis of written evidence the School may extend the periods of candidature.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate shall complete units to a total of 96 credit points.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Information Technology (Business).

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology on completion of 24 credit points.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology on completion of 48 credit points.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Master of Information Technology on completion of 72 credit points.
