Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection

Why study the Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection at UNE?

The Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection provides education and training in anatomy by dissection to medical and dental candidates. There will be two field of specialisation.

The Surgical Research Specialisation is for Surgical Trainees / Surgeons and study will be directed to research. A nominated area of anatomy related to their specific surgical area of interest (eg. anatomy related surgical approaches; grafts and flaps; vascularisation; development of prostheses; etc.) under specialist surgeon supervision.

The Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants Specialisation is for trainees who will proceed through a structured, specialist supervised, clinical oral surgical hospital (log book documented) program. The content of which being similar to that of the Specialty Advisory Committee for Oral Surgery of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (May 2010), which prepares the student for oral surgeon specialist accreditation.

Candidates who wish to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection on completion of 48 credit points, including units ANAT600, ANAT601, ANAT610 and ANAT611 or ANAT620 and ANAT621.

Intensive Schools

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a Bachelor of Medicine or a Bachelor of Dentistry* or a Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent from a recognised university or tertiary institution; or

(b) hold the Graduate Certificate in Applied Anatomy by Dissection* of the University of New England; or

(c) hold the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection* of the University of New England.

*Only those candidates admitted with a Bachelor of Denistry may undertake the Clinical Oral Surgery and Implants Specialisations. These candidates must also:

(i) be registered by the Dental Board of Australia; and

(ii) have current professional indemnity insurance for medical legal purposes.

International students must meet English language requirements acceptable for registration with the Medical, Dental or Veterinary Boards of Australia.

Medical registration: minimum IELTS 7 in all 4 areas (http://www.amc.org.au/images/FormsGeneral/NationalEngLangPol.pd).

Advanced Standing

A maximum of 24 credit points for completion of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Anatomy by Dissection or a maximum of 48 credit points for completion of the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection.

Admission to Candidature

Candidates admitted under Rule (c) shall be awarded advanced standing for a maximum of 48 credit points.

Period of Candidature

1. For candidates admitted under Rule (a) the period of candidature shall be up to five years as a part-time candidate.

2. For candidates admitted under Rule (b) the period of candidature shall be up to four years as a part-time candidate.

3. For candidates admitted under Rule (c) the period of candidature shall be up to two years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 72 credit points at 600-level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection.

Exit Pathways

Candidates may graduate with the Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy by Dissection on successful completion of 48 credit points including units ANAT620 and ANAT621 and continue with the Master of Applied Anatomy by Dissection, subject to completion with the candidate's period of candidature. Candidates who do not complete within their period of candidature must re-apply for admission and will be subject to the most current course rules.
