Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) have fulfilled all requirements for a degree of Bachelor of the University; or
(b) have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another University or institution recognised by the faculty for this purpose; or
(c) provide evidence of successful tertiary study and relevant professional experience, to show to the satisfaction of the school that he or she is adequately prepared for the candidature.
Advanced Standing
At the discretion of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for units passed at this or another institution that have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units listed in the program of study. Not more than six credit points of advanced standing may be granted under this rule.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 0.5 year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to two years as a part-time candidate.
Where a candidate has been granted advanced standing towards the Graduate Certificate, the faculty may reduce proportionately the period of candidature.
Course Requirements
1. To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 200-level or above approved by the course coordinator.
2. Units shall be selected from the following list of subjects unless otherwise approved by the course coordinator:
Ancient History, Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology, Asian Studies, Australian History, Chinese (Mandarin), Classical Languages (Greek/Latin), English, European and Asian Cultures, Film and Media Studies, French, Gender Studies, Geography, German, History, Indigenous Studies, Indonesian, International History, International Studies, Italian, Japanese, Linguistics, Music, Peace Studies, Philosophy, Political Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Studies in Religion, Theatre and Performance, Urban and Regional Planning (units defined as Urban and Regional Planning consist of 24 credit points selected from the following: ENGT 237; GEPL 301, 302, 316, 320, 322, 345, 350), Writing.
With the permission of the course coordinator, units in other subjects may be included.
Award of Degree
Graduating students in the Graduate Certificate in Arts who have successfully completed at least 24 credit points, including at least 12 credit points at 300 level, in one subject defined in Rule 1. or an approved course of study as determined by the relevant School Teaching and Learning Committee, may request that the one subject or approved course of study appear on their testamur for the Graduate Certificate in Arts.
Improper Conduct
Candidates are referred to the Student Coursework Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct Rules.
For candidates studying Full Time = 24 cps per semester.
For candidates studying Part Time = 24 cps per year.
12-15 Hours of study per week should be allocated for each 6 cp unit enrolment.
