Diploma in Modern Languages

Why study the Diploma in Modern Languages at UNE?

This course enables students to communicate and to become proficient in one language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish) and culture. This gives graduates a competitive advantage in a variety of workplaces, whether in Australia or overseas. It is available as a stand alone award or for students who are concurrently enrolled in a Bachelor course through UNE.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

1. A candidate shall follow a course of studies comprising units to the value of not less than 48 credit points in one language, which can include a six credit point in-country language unit such as ICLU300.

2. Unless otherwise permitted by the course coordinator, the program shall include units to the value of at least 48 credit points including not more than 18 credit points at 100-level and at least 12 credit points at 300-level, not including an in-country language unit.

3. The Head of School of Arts may permit a candidate who is enrolled under the Department of Education and Training Asian Languages Scholarship Program and who has completed a minimum of 24 credit points in the language, to substitute EDLA985 Secondary Education: Languages I and EDLA986 Secondary Education: Languages II for two of the four remaining 300-level language units, or to subsitute EDLA985 Secondary Education: Languages I and EDLA429 An Integrated Approach for Modern Language Teaching in Primary Schools for two of the four remaining 300-level language units. Students undertaking these LOTE methodology units will be able to complete a mentoring program with the Department of Education and Training in lieu of the usual practicum unit.

4. The Head of School of Arts may permit a candidate who is enrolled under the Asian Languages Accreditation Program and who has completed a minimum of 12 credit points in the language, to substitute EDLA985 Secondary Education: Languages I, EDLA986 Secondary Education: Languages II and PREX901 for three of the four remaining 300-level language units, or to substitute EDLA985 Secondary Education: Languages I and EDLA429 An Integrated Approach for Modern Language Teaching in Primary Schools and PREX901 for three of the four remaining 300-level units.

Program of Study

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

A language is defined as one of the following:
Chinese
French
German
Indonesian
Italian
Japanese
Spanish

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one language major shall be awarded the Diploma in Modern Languages.

Improper Conduct

Candidates are referred to the Student Coursework Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct Rules.

For candidates studying Full Time = 48 cps per year.
For candidates studying Part Time = 24 cps per year.
12-15 Hours of study per week should be allocated for each 6 cp unit enrolment.
