Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and professional nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete the first two years of full-time study have the option to exit with an Advanced Diploma in Nursing, and eligibility to seek Enrolled Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Students who successfully complete 3 years of full-time study exit with a Bachelor of Nursing and eligibility to seek Registered Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
The course is offered full-time on-campus in 1st year, then it is offered full or part-time, via 'Blended Learning' mode* in 2nd and 3rd year. The course aims to give graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a postgraduate level.
A central aim is to prepare graduate nurses for enrolment and/or registration as professional nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
* Blended learning refers to a combination of mandatory on-campus intensive schools, structured online learning and clinical practice blocks

| Benefits | Students who do not meet traditional entry requirements for most undergraduate nursing courses may seek to enter the UNE nursing courses via interview. Articulated Award Students can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 96 credit points and be eligible to apply for Endorsed Enrolled Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This enables them to seek employment as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse to assist them to cope financially with their final year of study if they opt to complete the Bachelor of Nursing. Students can then continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature. UNE has been at the forefront of nurse education longer than any other university in Australia. UNE was the first tertiary education provider in Australia to offer distance education for nurses.UNE nurse graduates are well respected within the profession, they are critical thinkers, and well prepared educationally for the professional challenges they will face. The 29-35 weeks of supervised clinical practice over 3 years ensures that students are well prepared for their roles as professional nurses when they complete their course. |

| Additional Requirements | Applicants must have a current First Aid Certificate which is WorkCover approved. This certificate should be completed before commencing study. Before commencing study and prior to attendance at UNE students need to ensure that they are appropriately vaccinated as per NSW Health policy. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/immunisation/ohs/ NSW Health require all students to be fully vaccinated and provide evidence of their vaccination status plus provide evidence of protection against the following: adult diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, hepatitis B (all hepatitis B vaccinations must have been completed well before the commencement of the course), measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox). Screening for for tuberculosis will be organised at UNE. Provide evidence of National Criminal History Record Check and obtain a National Police Certificate. | Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Candidates must complete 29-35 weeks of clinical practice, which is undertaken in each semester in health facilities in NSW. Clinical practice has been organised in block placements of two to eight weeks throughout the six semesters of the course. Clinical placements occur in most area health services of NSW. |

| Advanced Standing | Applications for advanced standing cannot be assessed unless the units that you are seeking credit for are complete. If you are currently enrolled in a course and will not receive the results before the advanced standing closing dates please submit a new application once you have obtained the results. Nursing students who seek Advanced Standing based on previous nursing studies undertaken at UNE or another university are assessed not just on unit equivalence but also on recency of study and clinical practice. If previous studies are more than three years old, students may be required to repeat portions of the equivalent unit, in particular the clinical practice requirements. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. |

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:

Period of Candidature
1. For candidates admitted under Rule (a) and (e), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.
2. For candidates admitted under Rule (b), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) two years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to five years as a part-time candidate.
3. For candidates admitted under Rule (c), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) two and a half years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to five and a half years as a part-time candidate.
4. For candidates admitted under Rule (d), the period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
1. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rules (a) and (e) must pass units to the value of 144 credit points.
2. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (b) must pass units to the value of 96 credit points.
3. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (c) must pass units to the value of 108 credit points.
4. To qualify for the award, a candidate admitted under Rule (d) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points.

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Nursing.
Articulated Award
Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates admitted under Rule(a) or (e) can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 96 credit points comprising units HHSC146, 147, 246, 247; HSNS112, 113, 114, 121, 122, 123, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230 and continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature.
Candidates admitted under Rule (b) can apply to graduate with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 48 credit points comprising units HHSC246, 247; HSNS201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230 and continue with the Bachelor of Nursing subject to completing within their period of candidature.
Exit Pathways
Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing under Rule (a) or (e) and who apply to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon completion of 96 credit points comprising units HHSC146, 147, 246, 247; HSNS 112, 113, 114, 121, 122, 123, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230.
Candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing under Rule (b) and who apply to discontinue their studies may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing upon successful completion of 48 credit points comprising units HHSC246, 247; HSNS201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 230.
Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Advanced Diploma in Nursing must apply for re-admission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Nursing. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University or external accreditation body requirements.
