| Entry Requirements | A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy) and: (a) shall have achieved a level acceptable to the Head of Music in Music 1 or Music 2 in the NSW Higher School Certificate or an equivalent examination approved by the school for this purpose or shall pass a department entrance test within six months prior to the date of enrolment; and (b) shall have on admission to the degree a performing standard equivalent to Grade 6 of the Australian Music Examinations Board; and (c) shall undertake such other musical tests as the head of discipline may require. English Language Proficiency At least one of the following criteria must be met: A1. English is the applicant's first language; or A2. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in a country in which English is the primary official language or co-official language and in which English was the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or A3. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in an institution in which English is the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or A4. (a) An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least a minimum overall score of 7.5 including a minimum result of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules and 7.0 in reading and writing; or (b) A Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT) result of Band A in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing; or (c) An International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) score of at least 4+ in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Band 4 Literacy Requirements Candidates must also demonstrate the equivalent of HSC Band 4 Standard English or English as a Second Language. Candidates who cannot demonstrate this level of attainment will be required to apply for admission into the Teacher Education Enabling Course and complete ENGL001. | Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | The professional experience or practicum is a pivotal part of any pre-service teacher education program. Experienced teachers within schools are selected to function as school-based educators of student teachers in supervising the practicum. Students are supported in not only developing essential teaching competencies, but also in thoughtfully combining those practical experiences with theoretical frameworks developed within academic units. Each secondary curriculum or method area has corequisite practicum requirements. Students are required to complete 80 days of supervised professional experience. This time may be structured partly in a dispersed days pattern (internals only) and as block practica of up to four weeks' duration. Generally, external candidates are permitted to undertake the practicum in an approved school of their own choice. Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the New South Wales Department of Education and Training's requirement to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to their professional experience placement. In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal record) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or ACT. Probity checks may be carried out prior to students undertaking any school experience. Candidates should be aware that they will be subject to probity checks on behalf of potential employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance to function as an independent classroom teacher. Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) four years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
1. To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 192 credit points.
2. Candidates must complete ENGL001 in the Teacher Education Enabling Course within the first two years of candidature.
OR
Candidates who have attained the required level of literacy must provide evidence to be recognised that the requirements for the Teacher Education Enabling Course have been met.
3. The Music component of the combined degree shall total at least 96 credit points and comprise:
(a) 72 credit points from Group 1;
(b) 12 credit points from Group 2;
(c) 12 credit points from Group 3.
4. The Teaching component of the combined degree shall total at least 96 credit points including 80 days of practicum and comprise:
(a) 48 credit points from Group 4;
(b) 24 credit points from Group 5;
(c) 24 credit points from Group 6 with at least six credit points from each of Groups 6A, 6B and 6C;
(d) all units from Group 7.

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching.
Progress and Conduct
Failure in any professional experience component of the award or breaches of professional conduct requirements or unethical conduct during the practical experience component shall be deemed to be unsatisfactory progress under General Rule 4. Any candidate who has not demonstrated HSC Band 4 Standard English or English as a Second Language or equivalent interstate attainment by beginning of the third years of candidature will be excluded from the course.
