Bachelor of International Studies

Why study the Bachelor of International Studies at UNE?

The Bachelor of International Studies is a three year degree. Half the degree comprises units with a global perspective from several disciplines. Topical issues include global security, earth in crisis, Islamic studies, cross-cultural communication, trade and Australia's relations with the US, Asia and the Pacific Islands.

Students can gain skills in at least one language and culture (Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Italian, German, or French).

Students also choose a major to specialize in an area of their choice such as communications, Asia, Europe, economics, peace and development, politics or religion.

A highlight of this degree is the opportunity to undertake an optional fourth year of study abroad. This is the Advanced Year. Students have found this immensely rewarding. Moreover, in country experience and language skills are valued by prospective employers.

There is also the option of doing Honours in fourth year. Honours coursework comprises four long research essays and a thesis on a topic of interest to the student.

A remarkable feature of this degree is that it can be undertaken by distance education. Much, or in some cases all, of the degree can be studied on line. In particular, the teaching of languages by distance at UNE is done with cutting edge technology, including on line.
