Why study the Bachelor of Education (Primary) at UNE?
The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is a primary initial-teacher education program that has been designed to meet the well-accepted requirements for primary initial teacher education in Australia, including the accreditation requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers. The program offers On- and Off- Campus strands. The On-Campus Strand is delivered entirely within the School of Education, whereas the Off-Campus Strand offers opportunities to study discipline units in the Arts and Sciences, as well as Education. The Off-Campus program also offers the opportunity to undertake Professional Experience in an international setting.
Teacher Registration: Students should note that teacher registration requirements vary from state to state. UNE bases its degree structures on the NSW Institute of Teachers' guidelines for teacher registration.

| Benefits | Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) have the opportunity to participate in overseas cultural experiences. A student may be approved to undertake an exchange program (normally one trimester in duration) which provides exchange students with the opportunity to undertake units at an overseas university which are then credited to their Australian degree. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in an international professional experience placement if a suitable school is available. |

| Entry Requirements | A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy). Assumed knowledge is any two units of English. English Language Proficiency At least one of the following criteria must be met: A1. English is the applicant's first language; or A2. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in a country in which English is the primary official language or co-official language and in which English was the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or A3. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in an institution in which English is the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or A4. (a) An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least a minimum overall score of 7.5 including a minimum result of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules and 7.0 in reading and writing; or (b) A Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT) result of Band A in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing; or (c) An International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) score of at least 4+ in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Band 4 Literacy and Numeracy Requirements Candidates must also demonstrate the equivalent of HSC Band 4 Standard English or English as a Second Language and HSC Band 4 General Mathematics or completion of Mathematics or Extension Mathematics to an equivalent standard. Candidates who cannot demonstrate this level of attainment will be required to apply for admission into the Teacher Education Enabling Course and successfully complete one or both of the units ENGL001 and/or MATH122. |

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | The professional experience or practicum is a pivotal part of any pre-service teacher education program. Experienced teachers within schools are selected to function as school-based educators of student teachers in supervising the practicum. Students are supported in not only developing essential teaching competencies, but also in thoughtfully combining those practical experiences with theoretical frameworks developed within academic units. Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the New South Wales Department of Education and Training's requirement to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to their professional experience placement. In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal record) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or ACT. Probity checks may be carried out prior to students undertaking any school experience. Candidates should be aware that they will be subject to probity checks on behalf of potential employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance to function as an independent classroom teacher. | Advanced Standing | 1. Students who transition into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) will automatically be granted Advanced Standing for all common and equivalent units of study, provided that sufficient credit points remain in their programs of study to enable NSWIT requirements to be met. 2. There shall be no maximum to credit points granted which have been passed at UNE prior to admission to candidature and which have not been counted towards a previous qualification. 3. Credit granted on the basis of units that have already counted towards any single award shall not exceed one-quarter of the credit points required for the Bachelor of Education (Primary). Except as provided under 1 and 2, the total credit granted shall not exceed 67 per cent of the total credit points or units required for the Bachelor of Education (Primary). |

Admission to Candidature

Course Requirements
On and Off Campus Strand:
Candidates must complete ENGL001 and/or MATH122 in the Teacher Education Enabling Course within the first two years of candidature.
OR
Candidates who have attained the required level of literacy and/or numeracy must provide evidence to be recognised that the requirements for the Teacher Education Enabling Course have been met.
On-Campus Strand:
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 192 credit points in Education units and 120 days of Professional Experience.
Off-Campus Strand:
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 192 credit points comprising:
Education component: Candidates must pass units to the value of 156 credit points in Education units and 80 days of Professional Experience.
Arts/Science component: Candidates must pass units to the value of 36 credit points in Arts and/or Science Units. These units can be undertaken at 100- and/or 200- and/or 300-level.
These may be taken as a specialisation of:
(i) 36 credit points from one Key Learning Area (KLA); or
(ii) 24 credit points from one Key Learning Area (KLA) and 12 credit points from a second Key Learning Area.

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Education (Primary).
Progress and Conduct
Any candidate who has not demonstrated HSC Band 4 Standard English or English as a Second Language or equivalent interstate attainment and HSC Band 4 in General Mathematics or completion of Mathematics or Extension Mathematics to an equivalent standard or equivalent interstate attainment by the beginning of the third years of candidature will be excluded from the course.
