| Entry Requirements | (a) be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy) English Language Proficiency At least one of the following criteria must be met: 1. English is the applicant's first language; or 2. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in a country in which English is the primary official language or co-official language and in which English was the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or 3. Satisfactory completion, no more than 5 years prior to the date of application for admission to UNE, of at least one year of full-time or equivalent full-time study at senior secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level in an institution in which English is the sole medium of instruction and assessment for the particular period of study claimed, resulting in an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) award or an award recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR); or 4. (a) An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least a minimum overall score of 7.5 including a minimum result of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules and 7.0 in reading and writing; or (b) A Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT) result of Band A in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing; or (c) An International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) score of at least 4+ in each of the four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. |

| Additional Requirements | A statement on Prohibited Employment Declaration and probity checks will be required as below for the work placement particularly where a placement is in a school setting or working with adults with a disability Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the requirement of various regulatory bodies to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the School of Education has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to their professional experience placement. These requirements are subject to change. | Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | It is envisaged that the majority of students will already be working in the sector. If a student is not currently working in the disability sector, they will be required to complete 3 weeks (15 days) of approved work experience. |

| Advanced Standing | Advanced standing may be granted in accordance with the Advanced Standing Policy. Students who are currently working in the special education/disability sector may apply for advanced standing for PREX922 and PREX923. |

Admission to Candidature

Advanced Standing

Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 1.5 years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to six years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 72 credit points and complete a work experience placement comprising 15 days.

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Special Education and Disability Studies..
Progress and Conduct
Failure in any professional experience component of the award or breaches of professional conduct requirements or unethical conduct during the practical experience component shall be deemed to be unsatisfactory progress.
